HOW TO INVEST

    HEALTH ON THE LINE:
A monitoring tool for babies and mothers with a high-risk pregnancy that combines technology, care and innovation to help save lives. A project that was born in Rio de Janeiro and, with VRB’s support, reached Paraty (Rio de Janeiro State) and Muriaé (Minas Gerais State), successfully helping to reduce the mortality of mothers and treat almost one hundred babies with syphilis in the area it operates.

    Context

By mid-2015, Rio’s North Zone suffered with a high number of pregnant women deaths. Health on the Line was created as a pilot project to deal with this problem and quickly reached exciting rates of reduction in the number of deaths.

    INNOVATION

Health on the Line allows a continuous and personalized monitoring by calling the patients in their cellphone from time to time. Remote emergency care through the phone can be crucial to avoid complications in emergency cases.

Ícone método l Anteriores l Saúde na Linha l VRB Social

    METHOD

The project has a multidisciplinary team and its own questionnaires to identify risk cases that demand attention. In Rocinha, a favela in Rio de Janeiro, Health on the Line focuses on cases of pregnant women with syphilis to avoid that they transmit the disease to their babies.

    Impact

Health on the Line has contributed to lowering the mortality of mothers in Rio’s North Zone, offering assistance to 90 babies with syphilis in 12 public health unities, and has assisted around 500 pregnant women in its first year of operation in Paraty.

    EARLY PROJECTS. THE SAME VALUES.

    SCHOOL CONNECTION
Changing public school students’ daily routine with innovative pedagogical methodologies. This is School Connection, a project that has been operating in schools in the Northeast of Brazil since 2105 and, through VRB investments, has reached São Paulo. Combining education initiatives and psychosocial support for those suffering from problems outside school, School Connection assisted and improved the performance and attendance of more than 40,000 students in 2017 alone.

    Context

João Kopke State School is in São Paulo’s downtown area known as Cracolândia (loosely translated as Crackland). The school grades were below the state average, the dropout rate was high and a large number of students were in grades that did not match their ages.

    INNOVATION

School Connection started operating in this public institution following strategic axes: strengthening reading, writing and mathematical skills, carrying out integrating activities among students, and including teenagers in the school’s decision processes.

    Impact

School Connection reaches around 1,000 students in João Kopke State School and has helped around 40,000 students in the Northeast of Brazil in 2017. The program’s goals include improving 40% of the students’ school reports and increasing school attendance in 70%.

HELPING PEOPLE IN SOCIAL VULNERABILITY. WE HAVEN’T STARTED DOING THIS TODAY.

    FAVELA HUB
A project that was born to connect education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and change the lives of people who live in the Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinho communities in Rio de Janeiro. Inspired by the “do it yourself” culture, Favela Hub is a place for knowledge exchange and generation through courses, workshops and activities focused on income generation, financial management, access to credit, professional training and qualification and the creation of social networks and technologies. Since 2017, over 6,200 local young people have benefited from it.

Ícone Contexto l Anteriores l Conexão Escola l VRB Social

    Context

The continuing and irreversible growth of urban ghetto outskirts is increasingly determining the dynamics of the cities. These low-income communities suffer from informal housing, lack of sanitation and sewage, armed violence, broken families, and a high dropout rate in schools, but they also share a culture of struggling for survival and entrepreneurship, in a constant interchange of solutions to their troubles.

Ícone Inovação l Anteriores l Conexão Escola l VRB Social

    INNOVATION

The favelas assert themselves as powerful sociocultural centers while exponential technologies kick off movements and revolutionize the way we solve problems. The lowincome community culture and new technologies meet in a search for more efficient, useful and fair solutions for social issues, and Favela Hub emerges in order to create an environment that stimulates creativity and social entrepreneurship.

Ícone Método l Anteriores l Conexão Escola l VRB Social

    METHOD

Favela Hub seeks to raise answers for social issues rooted in four axes: learning, offering courses and educational and qualification events; entrepreneuring, mentoring and supporting social and community businesses; cooperating, promoting meetings and connections between different players; and changing, carrying out research, testing and optimizing new methodologies and technologies activities.

Ícone Impacto l Anteriores l Conexão Escola l VRB Social

    IMPACT

By bringing new technologies and low-income community entrepreneurship, Favela Hub is, at the same time, a space for education and mentorship, an incubator of local projects and an accelerator of community or socially impactful initiatives. The goal is to help change the lives of thousands of people through income generation and innovative solutions with the potential of multiplying through other cities.

YOUR VALUES MEAN A LOT. AND SAFETY IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THEM.

    COMMITTING TO RIO’S FUTURE
Combining public safety and social integration, Committing to Rio’s Future focuses on initiatives that value police officers and strengthen the Institutional Communication in Rio’s Military Police (PMERJ) in order to achieve long-term improvements. Having a strong Police Department is crucial to reverse the violence situation in Rio de Janeiro and contribute to the future of the State.

Ícone Contexto l Anteriores l Compromisso Futuro Rio l VRB Social

    Context

For 23 years (1994-2017), around 45,000 police officers were part of Rio’s Military Police (PMERJ), out of which 3,397 died, 15,236 were injured and 18,633 were forced to retire due to injuries. The rates of dead, injured and retired police officers in Rio de Janeiro’s metropolitan area correspond to 7.55%, 33.86% and 41.41% respectively, a much higher rate than any United States Armed Forces wars in the 20th century.

Ícone Inovação l Anteriores l Compromisso Futuro Rio l VRB Social

    INNOVATION

The PMERJ reform will only take place if it comes from the corporation itself. Plenty of entities have good proposals, but none of them includes police officers in the developing of their plans. The innovation of this project consists in giving support and lead roles to the PMERJ itself, approaching sensitive and strategic issues.

Ícone Método l Anteriores l Compromisso Futuro Rio l VRB Social

    METHOD

In a partnership with PMERJ, VRB addresses two strategic points in the Military Police recovery: fighting the violence that victimizes police officers and the strengthening of the corporation’s institutional communication, a fundamental aspect to face a war that also involves the media.

Ícone Impacto l Anteriores l Compromisso Futuro Rio l VRB Social

    IMPACT

The project has yielded the largest opinion poll with police officers ever held in the history of PMERJ, with the participation of more than 9,000 officers. We carried out qualifying activities regarding the victimization of police officers in seminars, symposiums and workshops with experts and events with financial market investors. Furthermore, 120 highranked police officers took Media Training workshops to improve how the police communicates with society through the media.
